Chapter 9: Quito

The Weiss family, New Year’s Eve

In a dress, coat, scarf, and warm hat, Hanna walked festively to The Synagogue of the Young of Antwerp. The synagogue was located in a relatively new building on a street rising toward a residential neighborhood of the middle class. At the entrance stood two policemen who questioned harshly where Mickey and Hanna were heading. “We came to pray. We are Jews.” The policemen asked to see their passports, and then the bags they carried with them, and finally approved their entry into the synagogue.

“Way to go to the security measures here,” said Mickey. “It’s no wonder, after all the attacks in synagogues in the world, there must be a local deployment. Especially in light of anti-Semitism in Europe.”

The synagogue was filled with people. Mickey went toward the men’s section, not before he put on a makeshift skullcap that a smiling Gabbai gave him. “Happy New Year.”

“Happy New Year, happy holiday!”

The synagogue filled with the bustle of talk in French and Dutch together with greetings and best wishes in Hebrew. The smiles and words spoken in Hebrew as part of the holiday surprised Mickey. He did not expect to be so excited about hearing Hebrew. It seemed to him that ages had passed since they left the coast of Israel, and he missed it, greatly.

The women’s section was filled with elegantly dressed women, dressed in the best of European fashions. The modest ones, of course. Children dressed in festive clothes ran around the aisles and young girls whispered and giggled just as girls their age do everywhere else in the world. But holiday spirit and excitement rested on everyone. Everyone looked at Hanna and whispered. It was clear that she was not from here. A woman Hanna’s age, holding the hand of a girl of about ten, came to her and said, “Welcome.”

“Greetings to He who is present. Good year,” answered Hanna.

“Oh, Israeli,” the woman said, smiling. Within minutes, women with pretty good Hebrew surrounded Hanna and gently questioned her on the place of residence in the country, the place she was staying at in Antwerp, and more.

The prayer, though long, was moving and beautiful. The men in white shirts and ties, wearing knitted skullcaps, reminded Hanna of her friends and her family in the Moshav where she grew up. There were tears in her eyes and she felt choked up with emotion.. Only a few weeks had passed since she left, and already her home and extended family seemed so far away, so cherished. The pain pinched and didn’t release. She knew that her family had stood just a few hours ago in their synagogue in the Moshav, and she knew that they also thought of her absence just as she was thinking about them. I could have called and wished them a Happy New Year, she thought.

Hanna’s eyes grew moist and a groan escaped her mouth.

The woman to her left hugged her sensitively and was quick to say, “Darling, if you and your husband have nowhere to stay during the holiday, we invite you to come to us.
